Export WhatsApp on Android

Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus & more

This guide covers exporting WhatsApp chats from all Android devices including Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Huawei, and others. The export process is nearly identical across all Android phones — the main difference is which file manager app you use to locate your exported files.

How to Export a WhatsApp Chat

These steps work on all Android phones regardless of brand or Android version.

Works with:

Samsung Galaxy S24/S23/S22/S21 • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold/Flip • Samsung Galaxy A series • Google Pixel 8/7/6 • Xiaomi 14/13/12 • Redmi Note series • OnePlus 12/11/10 • Huawei P60/Mate 60 • All other Android devices

1

Open WhatsApp and go to the chat you want to export

2

Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right corner

3

Select 'More' from the dropdown menu

4

Tap 'Export chat'

5

Choose 'Include media' to include photos, videos, and voice messages

6

Select where to save: Internal storage, Google Drive, email, or another app

Pro Tip

Saving to Google Drive makes it easy to access your export from any computer. Just open drive.google.com and download the .zip file.

Where to Find Your Exported File

Different Android brands have different file manager apps. Here's where to look:

1

Samsung: Open 'My Files' app → Internal Storage → look for the .zip file

2

Google Pixel: Open 'Files' app → Downloads folder

3

Xiaomi/Redmi: Open 'File Manager' → Internal Storage

4

OnePlus: Open 'File Manager' → Internal Storage

5

Huawei: Open 'Files' app → Internal Storage

6

Or use the default 'Files' or 'Downloads' app on any Android phone

Pro Tip

Can't find your export? Search for '.zip' in your file manager app. The file will be named something like 'WhatsApp Chat - Contact Name.zip'.

Transferring to Your Computer

Get your exported chat from your Android phone to your computer for PDF conversion.

1

Google Drive: Save to Drive during export, then download from drive.google.com on your computer

2

Email: Send the .zip file to yourself and download on any computer

3

USB Cable: Connect your phone via USB, enable file transfer, and copy the .zip file

4

Nearby Share/Quick Share: Send to a nearby Chromebook or Android device

5

Cloud storage: Use Dropbox, OneDrive, or any cloud service you prefer

Warning

When connecting via USB, make sure to select 'File Transfer' or 'MTP' mode on your phone when prompted. 'Charging only' mode won't let your computer see your files.

Brand-Specific Tips

Special features and shortcuts for popular Android brands.

1

Samsung: Use Samsung DeX to manage files on a larger screen. Quick Share works with Windows PCs that have the Quick Share app installed.

2

Google Pixel: Files by Google has a 'Clean' feature to help manage storage if large exports fill up your phone.

3

Xiaomi: MIUI's built-in file manager can compress files further if needed. HyperOS users can use the new 'Share' hub.

4

OnePlus: OxygenOS File Manager integrates with OnePlus Cloud for easy backup.

5

Huawei: If using HarmonyOS without Google services, exports still work — just save to internal storage and transfer via USB or Huawei Cloud.

Troubleshooting

Export option is missing from the menu

Update WhatsApp to the latest version from Play Store (or your app store). The export feature requires WhatsApp 2.19 or later.

Export fails with 'Not enough storage' error

Large media exports need temporary storage space. Free up at least 2-3GB of space, or try exporting without media first.

Can't find the exported .zip file

Check your Downloads folder first. If not there, search for '.zip' in your file manager. Some phones save to 'WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Documents' folder.

USB transfer not working

After connecting USB, pull down your notification shade and tap the USB notification. Change from 'Charging' to 'File Transfer' or 'MTP' mode.

Export is very slow or crashes

For chats with thousands of messages and media, keep the screen on and WhatsApp in the foreground. Consider exporting without media for very large chats.

Huawei/Honor phone can't export (no Google Play)

WhatsApp still works on Huawei devices without Google. Make sure you have the latest WhatsApp APK from whatsapp.com. Export saves to internal storage.
